Stick and Rudder

Stick and Rudder, written by Wolfgang Langewiesche, is a classic aviation book that remains a favorite among pilots of all experience levels because of its clear, thoughtful explanation of how an airplane flies. The book breaks down the fundamental aerodynamic principles of flight, to help pilots truly understand how their inputs affect the airplane’s motion. Filled with practical insights, vivid descriptions, and a focus on pilot technique, Stick and Rudder has endured for generations as one of the best resources for mastering the craft of flying beyond rote memorization.

So, You Want to Be a Pilot, Eh?

So, You Want to Be a Pilot, Eh?, written by James Ball, is a guidebook to becoming a pilot in Canada. My parents bought this book for me as a Christmas present in 2014, and to this day it remains an excellent source of information. While some details are dated (the book was published in 2007), the core information is still highly relevant and valuable for aspiring pilots today.

Throughout his book, Jame's provides clear details and explanations on the following topics:

  • A thorough exploration into what pilots do

  • An examination of the different routes to obtain your pilot licence

  • Suggestions from numerous pilots to ensure success in your training

  • An outline of the pros and cons of the most common first flying jobs for Canadian pilots

  • Vital tips direct from Chief Pilots to help you obtain your first job as a pilot in Canada including essential job hunting, résumé and interview advice

  • Strategies to help you excel at your first job

  • Detailed hiring information on the various Canadian airlines

  • An in-depth look at the different career options for Canadian pilots

  • Important thoughts to consider when deciding if a career as a pilot is right for you
